Tim’s Breakfast Breakout

The Globe and Mail:

Move over McMuffin, Tim Hortons is getting into bacon and eggs. Starting this week, the iconic coffee chain will sell hot breakfast sandwiches at its 290 U.S. locations, and plans to bring the buns filled with cheese, eggs and sausage or bacon to Canadian stores soon.

“Eventually, we’ll roll it out in Canada,” said Jack Schuessler, president, chairman and chief executive officer of parent company, Wendy’s International Inc. of Dublin, Ohio, at the company’s investor day last week.

The move into cooked breakfast food marks a significant shift for Tim Hortons, which has traditionally sold only baked goods, including doughnuts, bagels, and muffins as a complement to its morning coffee. Until now, toasting was the extent of cooking at the chain during breakfast hours.

“If we had just stayed a coffee and doughnut shop we wouldn’t be where we are today. That’s why we went into lunch,” said Tim Hortons spokesman Greg Skinner.
