Mumbai: Medicine Shoppe India (MSI), the master franchisee of the 75 billion dollar American Medicine Shoppe International is planning to set up 100 new retail outlets in India in the current fiscal year to tap the ’strong boom’ in organised pharmaceutical retail sector.
The new stores would help MSI, which already has a chain of 100 retail stores in the country in franchisee system mainly in the tier-I cities, to double its presence here.
“We aim to cross the 700-mark by 2010 in India and make our presence felt in the rural areas,” Medicine Shoppe International Vice-President Bruce Burnett said.
The pharmaceutical retail market in India, dominated by the unorganised sector, is currently pegged at five million dollars.
MSI expects to roll out its rural India move by June this year. Rural India, deprived of proper medication, promises huge growth potential for retailing, he added.
