The government is supporting various campaigns to promote franchising among local businesses in its move to make Malaysia the regional franchise hub, said Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry’s deputy secretary general Musa Muhamad.
“We (also) want Bumiputera participation in the business and we want them to go abroad as well,” Musa told reporters after officiating the launch of the Franchise International Malaysia 2006 (FIM 2006) exhibition and conference in Kuala Lumpur on April 13. Bumiputera companies accounted for 23% of the total franchises in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Franchise Association chairman Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said FIM 2006, to be held on Aug 3-6, aimed to attract between 10,000 and 12,000 visitors. Last year, it attracted 8,754 vistors, he said.
Among the highlights of the event are a keynote address by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and a talk by a representative from McDonald’s on what it takes to be a successful franchisee.
