The Star:

GONE are the days where we used to be contented with just the simple bread loaf we routinely get from coffee shops.

With fancy bakeries mushrooming even in remote housing areas, consumers now have a wider choice and more say in their diet.

The same can be said of traditional steamed buns, better known among Malaysians as pau.

Although we have yet to see stylish cafes selling these favourite breakfast and tea-time snacks, there is at least one company that believes steamed buns can have a massive following as bread.

Era-Life F&B Sdn Bhd, the operator of Baoz aims to grow the brand into a well-known fast-food concept within five years.

“We plan to set up a chain of franchised Baoz outlets locally and abroad this month, managing director Wooi Hong Lim told StarBiz in an interview.

Lim is confident Era-Life is well-positioned for such an expansion and plans to open another 11 Baoz outlets by the end of the year under its franchising programme.

The new outlets will be situated in the Klang Valley, Ipoh, Penang, Johor Baru, Sabah and Sarawak.

The first Baoz outlet was opened in 1-Utama in November 2004. Era-Life currently owns and operates seven outlets, which are located mainly in Kuala Lumpur.
