Biz Journals:

Unique Pizza and Subs Corp. expects a fast delivery in its national expansion plans, as it looks to serve up 1,000 new locations within five years.

The company plans to pursue a unique expansion method: converting mom-and-pop pizza shops to the Unique Pizza and Subs brand. It hopes to capitalize on the hundreds of independent pizza joints nationwide that struggle to build value in their businesses beyond the equipment and the real estate. “While there’s a lot of pizza places, we believe a lot of time owners want to belong to something larger but can’t afford to,” said Bill Vowler, father of founder Jim Vowler and the company’s executive vice president and general manager.

“Many are struggling because they don’t have buying power of product. They’re a one-off store. They don’t have the value in their business to sell to anybody.”

Jim Vowler, a veteran of Fox’s Pizza, opened his first Unique location in the struggling community of Millvale 12 years ago. The chain has since expanded to six locations in the region.

“The idea was to prove it can work in the little town of Millvale, then it can work anywhere,” said Jim Vowler.

Now, Unique has secured $1 million in private placement funding, and last month, the company began trading on the pink sheets, with plans to offer its stock on the NASDAQ within the next few years.
