AN international franchise operation which launched its Australian campaign from Adelaide has become a casualty of the sandwich war.

The Pirie St Quiznos Sub store has closed. It had been the last of seven Adelaide outlets still operating with the other stores having closed progressively over the past 12 months.

Quiznos Pirie St franchisees Chris and Michael Moraitis said in a statement posted on the door of their outlet that despite their best efforts, the business was not viable.

“Over the last 12 months we have made every effort to please our valued customers, however this wasn’t enough to make our business viable,” the franchisees said in a statement.

“Simply, the Quiznos brand could not compete.

“Unfortunately we are unable to continue. We would like to thank you for your business and we apologise for not been (sic) able to serve you in the future.”

The Australia-New Zealand master franchise for the American concept store is held by Adelaide-based Retail Brands Group. The company is also in control of the Wendy’s ice cream brand.

Retail Brands Group chairman Ross Kennan said the circumstances in SA were “unfortunate” and there were a variety of reasons for the Adelaide stores’ closures.

“We have had some absolutely unexplainable circumstances where we have had franchisees open for 10 days and then close,” he said.

“Franchisees make their decisions for a variety of different reasons. I can’t, for commercial and legal reasons, discuss any of them individually.”
