Many businesswomen choose franchises that connect with personal interests

Declining health was the primary reason that Brenda Baedke left the corporate world in 2000. After working for 20 years in human resources and with increasing stress-related health problems, Baedke, 53, took some time off to spend with her grandchildren.

Her life changed when a friend invited her to a Curves fitness center, and she was hooked. As Baedke’s health improved with the physical activity and camaraderie that Curves provides, her desire to help other women change their lives in this positive way grew as well. She now owns three Curves franchises — in downtown Louisville and in Corydon and Scottsburg, Ind.

The average Curves franchisee investment is $53,450, which includes the franchise fees, exercise equipment, training and a mentor during opening week, said Becky Frusher, communications manager with Texas-based Curves International.

Costs related to leasing or purchasing real estate are extra.

Curves franchise fees are $39,900 each, with royalty fees of 5 percent of gross sales, not to exceed $795 per month.

Baedke said that, at her stage of life, the experience of being a Curves franchisee has been particularly rewarding.

“As an ‘empty-nester’ with a strong nurturing side, I am working to care for others and share the well-being I have gained with other women,” she said. “I am no longer on any medication, I have the freedom to visit my grandchildren whenever I want to, and I am surrounded … by wonderful, caring people.”
