Biz Journals:

Submarine sandwich shop franchiser Penn Station Inc. is eyeing Nashville for growth with plans to add an additional 17 shops.

The company has three Penn Station East Coast Subs franchise locations in the Nashville market and believes there’s room for growth, said President Craig Dunaway in a statement announcing the expansion effort. “When we look at population, demographics and the eating away from home trends, Nashville was one of our top markets chosen for growth,” he said.

By the company’s tally, 17 locations would create about 400 jobs and infuse about $10 million in the local economy when taking wages, local purchases, sales tax and construction costs into account.

“We have had several franchisee inquiries for Nashville, Brentwood and Hendersonville,” said Mark Partusch, director of development for the privately-held Cincinnati chain.

The company’s franchise system typically signs franchisees looking to open three-to-five locations.

Founded in 1985, the company has 160 restaurants in operation, primarily in the Midwest and Southeast.
