Unique Pizza & Subs Corporation Growth Strategy

Larry Oakley:

Vowler told me that the pizza chains limit their locations to large highly populated areas. UPZS will also go into a large market area, open a Unique Pizza & Sub facility, & make it a successful operation. But the similarity with the well-known pizza operations stops there.

After such a facility is established, Vowler will write to all the “Mom & Pop” pizza shops within 100 miles — he’ll select them with the intent of converting one such operation to a Unique Pizza & Sub franchise in each town within 100 miles.

Vowler began with his first Unique Pizza location in a small town to prove that his strategy related to operating in a small town was valid. He chose Millvale, PA — now it’s the only shop there that after 11 years still has the same owner — most shops change hands several times in that period of time. Such staying power is an excellent sign that the shop has operated successfully.
