James A. Flynn, president and chief executive officer of Wingstop Restaurants Inc., was recognized by Ernst & Young as the top entrepreneur in the Retail and Consumer Products category in the 2006 Southwest Area Entrepreneur of the Year Awards on June 17 in Dallas. He is now among the finalists for the national award to be announced in November in Palm Springs, Calif.
According to Ernst & Young, the award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic and growing businesses. Previous Southwest Area North award winners include Dallas Mavericks Owner Marc Cuban, Former Presidential Candidate Ross Perot, Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and Sonic CEO Cliff Hudson.
Flynn joined Wingstop in 2003 and is responsible for the chicken wing chain’s top line strategy and the company’s full scope of development.
During his tenure, Wingstop has grown from 90 restaurants to more than 550 either open or under development across the country. The chain has also garnered many national awards and recognitions, as well as gained national appeal with the signing of three-time Super Bowl champion and NFL Hall of Fame inductee Troy Aikman as the company’s spokesman.
“The award may have had my name on it, but it should have read ‘to all the team members at Wingstop Restaurants Inc.’ This recognition never would have been possible without everyone’s hard work and dedication, said Flynn. “I’m proud of the shape the company has taken, and at the same time I’m very excited about the direction Wingstop is headed. We’re not the type to rest on what we’ve already accomplished.
