The first Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor in Hawaii opened Friday at Ward Centre next to Crazy Shirts.

Owner Ronni Tai See, whose company is called Scoop Shops Hawaii Inc., said she would give away free ice cream to the first 50 people walking through the door. “We chose to open our first store in Ward Centers because it is the hottest entertainment complex in town,” See said. “Plus, all the development in that area has the potential to draw even more people to our shop.”

The Ben & Jerry’s parent company in Vermont says it requires its franchise developers to have a minimum net worth of $300,000 exclusive of primary residence of which $120,000 needs to be liquid. Initial franchise fee structure is $30,000 or less, plus a marketing contribution of up to 4 percent and a royal fee of 3 percent that the company says is one of the lowest in franchising.
