Austin Daily Herald:

The irresistible Tendermaid sandwiches, an original in Austin since 1938, are now devoured in Mankato. And maybe in Owatonna, St. Cloud, Rochester and the Mall of America in Bloomington soon.

David Bushaw, along with his wife Tressa Bushaw of St. Peter, and Gary and Sara White of Austin, recently opened the newest addition to the food court at the River Mills Mall in Mankato. ‘We’ve taken Tendermaid and franchised,’ Bushaw said. ‘Every previous owner has always wanted to do this.’

With the original and locally famous red and white Austin Tendermaid building, located at 217 Fourth Avenue NE, on the front of menus, the Mankato restaurant opened July 10. Bushaw said he’s looking at other malls in cities like Owatonna and St. Cloud to open other Tendermaids. ‘Offering a unique menu to mall shoppers, Tendermaid serves loose meat hamburgers and Wimmer hotdogs with a variety of toppings. The menu includes fresh homemade potato chips and old-fashioned malts and shakes,’ the Tendermaid press release said.

Calling themselves Minnesota’s oldest hamburger shop, ‘on the loose since 1938,’ the Tendermaid in Mankato lets customer pick the toppings of their burger. ‘It’s in a concept so you can build your own hamburger,’ Bushaw said. ‘Now we can get a burger done in 60 seconds.’ He has plenty of experience in the restaurant business, owning and building 50 in the past, he said him and the other Tendermaid owners are excited about bringing Tendermaid to the taste buds of non-Austin residents around the state.
