HEALTH-conscious consumers are taking their dough away from supermarkets and giving it to specialist bread shops and bakeries.

Brisbane-based Brumby’s Bakeries yesterday posted a 21 per cent rise in annual earnings and managing director Michael Sherlock said consumer demand for fresh, preservative-free bread had driven the rise.

The Bendigo Stock Exchange-listed franchise group posted a net profit after tax of $2.08 million for the 12 months to June 30, up from $1.72 million in the previous corresponding period.

Mr Sherlock said the positive result was led by a 19 per cent jump in sales revenue, from $8.35 million to $9.92 million.

People who used to buy bread from supermarkets were becoming more discerning, he said.
