When Mike and Glenda Kriegl chose the location for their Culver’s of Darboy restaurant on E. Calumet Street in 1999, they didn’t have many neighbors: no Kohls, no Target, no Wal-Mart.

Today the neighborhood is booming, with a Kohls, Target and Wal-Mart nearby, though so is Culver’s. The business recently won the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award in the wholesale and retail category. ‘It’s very humbling and gratifying to be recognized,’ said Mike Kriegl.

Despite a history of achievements that includes multiple awards from Culver Franchising Systems and a past Fox Cities Chamber’s Rising Star Award, Kriegl said the reasons for his restaurant’s success are simple. ‘We go about everyday business. We strive to do things right,’ he said.
