Franchising in Spain has an important rule in the economical growth of the country, in the only 2005 it has employed 201.977 professionals, registering
an annual turnover of 17.909 millions of Euros, about the 12% more than the turnover of 2004.

Spanish franchising world can trust in the Asociaciòn Española de Franquiciadores (Spanish Association of Franchisors, AEF). Born in 1995, the AEF has an important rule in promoting, protecting and spreading the franchising, being a member of the European Federation. It is supported in the development of its functions by the Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Madrid (Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid), which has a Franchising department to deal information and counselling.

At the present time there are close to 712 franchisor working in Spain, whom the 80% are Spanish brands, followed by France and Italy, as favourite foreign presences. In the last year 63 new chains were registered. Consequently, the economical answer is very positive: in the latest decade the turnover of franchising doubled and, obviously, the number of franchisees with it.

The system shows a great interest in categories specialized in foods, while we find that clothing and outfit stay only at the 3rd position; the category of para chemist has a small portion of the market, even if it is thought to have good chances to develop. Franchising in Spain is protected and ruled by the RealDecreto 157/1992 and its subsequent modifications.

Synthetically, who intends to start business as a Franquiciadores (Franchisor) has to be registered into the special book, which rules can be found in the RealDecreto 2485/1998. Moreover, the franquiciador, the franchisor must provide the franchisee all the information about the terms of the agreement within twenty days before the writing out of it or before the pre-deed underwriting.

There’s a great number of exhibitions, events and lectures about franchising in Spain, every year in many different towns all over the country; the most important one is the SIF & Co, which takes place in Valencia every autumn. In winter time 2 exhibitions usually take place: the Franquiatlántico, at Vigo, and the BNF, Barcelona Negocios y Franquicias. In spring time, Madrid hosts the Expofranquicias and Rute the Feria de la Franquicia de Andalucía.
