A retailer of specialty soups immortalized in a 1995 episode of the TV show “Seinfeld” is moving into the Denver area.
The first The Original SoupMan store is due to open Nov. 10 in the FlatIron Crossing Mall in Broomfield. Gabriel Selko, who with Robin Braun are partners in Rocky Mountain Gourmet Soups LLC, will open a second location in Boulder. The site of the Boulder location hasn’t been determined, Selko said.
Al Yeganeh, who was mocked as a “soup Nazi” on the TV show for his strict rules about ordering, started Soup Kitchen International in New York City in 1984. He began selling franchises last year of The Original SoupMan and expects to have 1,000 locations in the next seven years.
Selko said he decided to invest in a franchise after seeing Yeganeh make his pitch for the concept on CNBC. He flew to New York, met Yeganeh and tasted his soups. Selko’s favorites, he said, were the jambalaya, lobster bisque and crab bisque.
Selko said his locations will offer about 50 soups, with seven choices that change daily.
The Original SoupMan’s second Colorado store opens in Colorado Springs Dec. 6 at 10 S. Tejon St. Franchisee Debra Canale, a Louisiana transplant, plans two more locations in the area. Her company is called RoadDog Soup LLC, but her restaurant carries the Original SoupMan name.
