DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs, Mia Mottley, is encouraging Barbadian businesses to set up franchises enabling them to operate in other countries.
Speaking at the launch of Leacock’s The Home Source, a new hardware store replacing Barbados Hardware, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that there were too many business enterprises doing well on the local market that had chosen not to export capital and franchise their operations. She noted that Caribbean people naturally preferred their products over those originating from extra-regional sources, but often the regional products were not as well packaged or marketed as their foreign counterparts.
Mottley said one of the difficulties in Barbados’ manufacturing sector was that not enough was done to ensure there was appropriate distributive capacity for items produced.
According to her, “We cannot ask people to invest more in plant and capital to produce more without ensuring there is an opportunity for sale within their market as well as the potential for export.
