U.S. restaurant chain Shoney’s has been bought by the largest Church’s Chicken fast-food franchisee for an undisclosed amount.

Royal Capital Corp. chief executive officer David Davoudpour said the purchase would make Shoney’s ‘an even greater brand’ and return it ‘to its glory days as an exciting food destination for millions of satisfied customers across the United States,’ the (Nashville) Tennessean reported.

Shoney’s, with 282 locations in 18 states, had more than 1,000 restaurants in the early 1990s. It shrank due to a debt burden, changing leadership and competition from big casual dining chains such as Applebee’s, the newspaper said.

Shoney’s operates mostly in the Southern and Midwestern United States. It was once a franchise of the Big Boy hamburger chain and is named after Alex Schoenbaum, the Southeast’s original Big Boy owner.
