CornerStone Coffee looks like your typical java shop.
There’s the fireplace, the counter full of coffee-related fare and the occasional customer with a laptop, tapping away while sipping on a cuppa joe.
But David Many has a connection to each detail. It’s his menu. His decor. His concept.”Listen to this,” Many said, pausing to hear a line about espresso playing from the shop’s sound system, which pipes in Italian-themed tunes.
It’s the bit of Italy that 36-year-old Many says sets his coffee shop apart from the competition. It’s a “gourmet Italian” experience, he said, with pastries from Lansing’s Roma Bakery Deli & Fine Foods and Italian espresso and coffees.
“I wanted to serve up not just a cup of coffee, but atmosphere,” said Many, president of Holt-based Cornerstone Foods Group LLC.
Coffee shops are booming across the country. There were more than 21,400 in the United States in 2005, up from just 5,000 a decade earlier, according to the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
