There are three Tony Boombozz pizzerias in Louisville today, but the founder of the gourmet concept sees the potential for as many as 180 locations by late 2011.

“We have an aggressive expansion plan,” said Tony Palombino, who opened his first store nine years ago on Frankfort Avenue. “People really want a higher-end pizza, and they’re willing to pay for it.” The key to the future at Boombozz is a uniform franchise offering — a thick legal document spelling out the details of the business, from the initial franchisee investment down to how the cheese is grated.

Franchising has been a growth vehicle for some of Louisville’s most successful companies, including Papa John’s International, KFC Corp., Tumbleweed Southwest Grill and Texas Roadhouse.

Palombino isn’t the only local entrepreneur hoping to hit it big in the quick-service category. FireFresh BBQ, with seven stores in the Louisville area, will open its first location outside Kentucky next month with a franchisee in Michigan. Bruce Loeffler, the creator of FireFresh, hopes to open additional stores later this year in New Albany, Ind., Parkersburg, W.Va.; and Lawrenceburg, Ky.
