McDonald’s Holdings Co (Japan) plans to raise its proportion of franchise restaurants to 70 pct from 30 pct over the next five years, reducing its dependence on costly directly managed stores, the Nikkei reported, without citing sources.
To reach the 70 pct goal, at least 1,700 out of 3,800 stores will have to be converted into franchise stores, the business newspaper said.
By reducing the share of directly managed stores, the firm will be able to pour management resources into developing new products, improving kitchen equipment and streamlining distribution and procurement, the Nikkei said.
