A waterless carwash was always going to be a hit in Australia, one of the most arid continents on earth, but now a local company is dipping its toe into the less water-conscious European market.

Ecowash Mobile, established by former race and rally drivers Jim Cornish and Stewart Nicholls in 2004, has launched its first European franchise in south-eastern France.

The Ecowash system involves spraying a biodegradable compound onto a car to encapsulate surface dirt, before it is wiped off with a cloth, leaving a protective coating behind.

The company claims the process works on dirt up to 5mm thick and has seen “some pretty dirty cars” transformed - all without wasting a drop of water.

Mr Cornish said Ecowash Mobile Europe planned to change the way cars were washed across the continent, with master franchises planned for Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Belgium.

“The response to the brand (in France) … has been fantastic so far,” Mr Cornish said.
