News:
I’M sure many readers know someone who took a package from their 9-to-5 job and bought a franchise.
For many, it works a treat, running a business under the umbrella of a household brand.
But others never adapt to being a franchisee; it proves far too stressful.Franchisors recognise this reality; they are getting more selective about selling franchises. They want entrepreneurs who can grow a business, and are willing to work within the system.
It is not only franchisors who are getting choosier. I’m warning clients they, too, must fully understand what’s entailed in signing up for a franchise.
Are they too entrepreneurial? It’s not as silly as it sounds. There are good franchisees happy to work inside the boundaries of a franchise; the orderly structure suits them down to the ground.
But for others a franchise proves far too restrictive. They have thought long and hard about their own ideas to improve the business and don’t want someone saying “no” when they want to implement them.
One example that comes to mind is someone who bought a franchise in a sandwich shop chain and wanted to install a coffee machine.
