Tax preparation company Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. said Monday a franchisee facing allegations of fraud agreed to temporarily suspend its business.
The franchisee will cease preparation and filing of tax returns at all of its more than 125 locations, affecting tax offices in Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, the Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina and Birmingham, Ala.
Last week, the company said it was conducting an internal review of allegations made against the franchisee. Earlier in the week, the federal government said it planned to bar the franchisee from preparing tax returns over allegations of fraud and more than $70 million in combined losses to the U.S. Treasury.
Jackson Hewitt has more than 6,500 franchised and company-owned offices nationwide.
