Would You Like Wi-Fi With That?

Back when other fast food and coffee outlets were serving up chargeable Wi-Fi in , McDonald’s was a beacon of light for those needing to check their e-mail quickly on the go. Wi-Fi has been available in most outlets in the island-state since 2004 and is free for use.

Perhaps McDonald’s ’s strategy was to counter the more fashionable coffee outlets by offering something they didn’t. But did it attract more customers?

Chen Yaw Wei, information systems director of McDonald’s , told Computerworld that while the company does not benchmark Wi-Fi usage against customer patronage, it has noticed “some regular customers coming by for breakfast and continuing to stay to do work on their laptops.”

He also said that there are “more youths in the evening who come for dinner and stay for a while to surf on the terminals.”

Although free Wi-Fi has yet to transform McDonald’s business in Singapore, it is a critical productivity and revenue tool in the United States. The case studies that follow may offer some lessons.
