Pizza Pizza, Ontario’s best-known pizza chain, has made a major move into Western Canada through the purchase of Edmonton-based Pizza 73.
However, executives with the Pizza Pizza Royalty Income Fund say there are no plans to rebrand the Pizza 73 takeout franchises in the West, which includes three outlets in Saskatoon.
Currently, Pizza Pizza has 532 restaurant locations in Ontario and Quebec, while Pizza 73 has just 48 locations, most of them in Alberta.
However, the Pizza Pizza brand has made an appearance in Western Canada in the past few years in non-traditional locations such as the food court kiosk at Cineplex Galaxy, where a Pizza Pizza opened in Saskatoon last September. According to Cineplex Galaxy spokesperson Pat Marshall, that downtown location has already developed a regular following, with people buying takeout pizza on their way home from work.
While Pizza Pizza is a household name in Ontario, the only time a Saskatchewan person would see any marketing reference is on rink board advertising from an NHL game broadcast from Toronto or Ottawa.
