The first franchise system in Slovenia was created in 1980. The very reasons of the introduction of franchising for the most important domestic traders was to cover commercially less attractive remote parts of the country. The Slovenian economy has grew up by franchising, thanks also to foreign brands which have imported a new business spirit. Many Slovenian master franchisees have learnt that foreign franchise systems could ensure them a safer future, with strategic partners, international markets and higher visibility. Nowadays we can count about 106 franchise systems and about 980 outlets; the most driving sectors are represented by fast food restaurants, services and hotels.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry has included the development of franchising in its potential area of activities, even if any specific plan of development hasn’t been already settled. The National Chamber of Commerce organises many activities aiming at promoting franchising, supported by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and by some local and international franchises. And the GEA College organises every year workshops intended for potential franchisees. Franchising has been taught as an elective at the College for Entrepreneurship in Portoroz and included as a chapter in the textbooks of the University studies of small business management.
