Former Detective Signs Up For New Business

It’s the MacDonald’s of the sign industry – operating in more than 800 centres in 45 countries around the world – and for one Invercargill man the prospect of joining a global empire was not something he was about to baulk at.

After a career spanning 15 years in the police force Derek Millar has gone into business as a franchisee for Speedy Signs.

Taking on the franchise did come with unexpected perks, Mr Millar said.

These included two weeks in sunny Florida, where the network has its headquarters.

He worked full days and some nights to become schooled in what it takes to run a Speedy Signs franchise.

Launched in the United States 20 years ago, Speedy Signs is the largest signs and graphics company in New Zealand, indeed the world.

Mr Millar said an interest in technology and computers, together with a desire to be out and about, saw him answer an advertisement earlier this year for franchisee owners to join the international business.
