Franchisers Urge Respect For Young Staff

The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) has urged greater respect for staff members by franchisees in the wake of a case in which workers were expected to find shift replacements if they were off sick.

The FCA suggested franchise operators who showed disrespect for their staff should consider changing careers.

An Australian Workplace Agreement (AWA) at a Bakers Delight franchise in Sydney’s south caused a stir last week when it was found to have stated that workers would be sacked if they called in sick.

Bakers Delight Holdings threatened to revoke the Kareela outlet’s franchise after it was revealed the agreement forced staff to find a replacement to cover shifts if they were ‘going away, having a family gathering, sick or whatever’.

The FCA said it supported the fair treatment of franchise employees and recommended to its member franchisees that they meet federal and state laws when dealing with staff…
