American City Business Journals/Atlanta:
Hotel chain InterContinental Hotels Group has joined the ranks of major companies marketing themselves on Second Life, the popular online virtual world that has attracted 8.5 million ‘residents’ in just 4 years of operation.
The Atlanta-based company, which operates brands including Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn, on June 29 launched Crowne Plaza’s ‘The Place to Meet Island,’ where real businesspeople can create virtual alter-egos, called ‘avatars,’ to hold meetings.
InterContinental hopes to draw in new tech-savvy ‘netizens’ and engage its current customers even more. Just like a real-world conference, avatars on ‘The Place to Meet Island’ can present slide shows and projections. They can even eat virtual doughnuts.
