Franchising in Hong Kong started its development in 1980 when some foreign brands, as Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald’s, opened their outlets and immediately succeeded. Nowadays franchising is slightly growing up; we can count about 100 franchising chains, whose the 43,2% are local, the 20,3% is represented by foreign brands working by sub-franchising while the 36,5% is represented by ordinary foreign franchises cooperating with local operators. The most driving sectors are represented by the restaurants and fast-foods category, services and real estate agencies.

The Hong Kong Franchise association was founded in 1992 as an internal committee of the local Chamber of Commerce; it was created to support and promote franchising development. The HKFA is used to organize seminars and courses about franchising industry and it has also published books and CD-Rom about the subject.
