The UAE has become the latest country to join McDonald’s mission to defend vilification with revamps to sites and menus.

In an exclusive interview with Caterer Middle East, managing director of McDonalds UAE Rafic Fakih revealed plans to remodel all of its restaurants within the next two to three years, with increased emphasis on healthy options.

The company will gauge the impact of its ‘zoning’ strategy at the recently re-opened Jumeirah Beach Road outlet in Dubai, with designated areas for parties, flat screen TVs showing cartoons, its second McCafé in the emirates, the main dining area and play area.

All of the old restaurants will be remodelled to have this more modern, warm and spacious look with new colour schemes. We’re moving towards the casual dining restaurant look, which is now a trend worldwide.”

Negative media coverage has not affected sales, according to Fakih, however new initiatives such as the open door policy - providing back of house tours for customers and in turn ramping up awareness of the kitchens’ preparation stages - have received favourable feedback from its first 400 participants.
