Brooke earned $2.9 million, or 22 cents a share, in the second quarter of 2006.

Despite the decline this year, the company said its first half earnings of $9.5 million, or 63 cents a share, remain 48% higher than the $6.4 million, or 50 cents a share, reported a year ago.

Higher profits on the sale of loans contributed to the first-half increase, the company said.
