When Pat Finelli graduated with his accounting degree in 1984, he saw an employment ad for a 35-outlet takeout chain called Pizza Pizza. Before accepting the position, he took a quick survey of the fast-food landscape, examining similar-sized Country Style and Mr. Sub chains.

Pizza Pizza had grown relatively slowly from 1967, when company founder and current chair and owner Michael Overs opened his first store at Wellesley St. E. and Parliament St. in Toronto.

Back then, chains could stick to a simple formula, changing little while profits flowed. Competition was light.
