Hamburgers, sandwiches, hot dogs and pizzas have already become a part of the Czech diet. But the changing lifestyle, growing economy and rising generation are promising an even brighter future for the already booming fast food sectors.

With new international fast food chains coming to the market and estab-lished players announcing ambitious expansion plans, the Czech fast food sector is set to grow by at least 10 percent annually for the next five years, accord-ing to market research agencies Incoma Research and GfK Praha.

The proportion of money people an-nually spend on food eaten outside their homes is also anticipated to grow from the current 20 percent and reach 25 per-cent, in about five years. In France, for example, the current ratio is 30 percent and in the U.S. about half of all money spent on food is handed over in restau-rants and take-out outlets, according to Incoma Research and GfK Praha.

Eating habits and lifestyle are chang-ing as people spend more time in the continuously mushrooming shopping malls, and enjoy combining entertain-ment, shopping and eating at one place and time, said Karel Mayer, a hospitality consultant at Incoma Research and GfK Praha. Increasing purchasing power and an incoming generation that is growing up with junk food are other factors that will spur the sector’s further growth, he said. Many of the new outlets are clus-tered around shopping center “food courts”—a U.S. concept that groups fast food companies in a shared dining area.
