PICK ’n Pay still has the largest market share among food retailers despite losing some ground in recent years, market research by Absa Asset Management shows.
Absa Asset Management Private Clients analyst Chris Gilmour says Pick ’n Pay has the highest market share and is stable at 36%.
“This is a huge market share to defend and it would be surprising indeed if it wasn’t under continuous attack.”
Pick ’n Pay CEO Nick Badminton says Gilmour’s figures concur with the company’s own analysis. “Pick ’n Pay’s market share over 10 years has grown and is now stable and we will defend our share aggressively.”
Shoprite disputes Pick ’n Pay’s market share. A spokesman says it appears as if “the analyst’s research is not correct as Pick ’n Pay’s market share is slightly below 36%”.
