French food retailer Carrefour is to launch a franchised convenience store format in Poland, country manager Alain Souillard told a press conference.

The company is initially to develop 20-40 stores with an area of 80-500 square metres under the “5 minutes” banner.

“It’s a way for us to expand more quickly, without investing a lot of money,” Souillard said.

Carrefour officials added that the recently launched Carrefour Express banner, which comprises supermarkets of 500-2,000 square metres, will also be operated on a franchise basis in Poland.

Carrefour operates 70 hypermarkets and 269 supermarkets in Poland, including stores acquired last December from Dutch-based Ahold.
