FARMERS received a boost yesterday after it was reported that fast food giant McDonald’s is to up the price it pays for beef and pork.

In a move to support Britain’s beleaguered farming industry, the UK arm of the burger chain is to increase the price it pays for meat by about 5% over the market rate.

Livestock farmers have endured a torrid summer, after flooding and wheat shortages ramped up the cost of animal feed, while trade also took a hit from the outbreaks of foot-and-mouth and blue tongue disease.

McDonald’s currently buys all its meat from the UK and Ireland, but has said that it will cut the amount brought in from the Republic and increase the amount of beef purchased in England, Wales and Scotland to around two-thirds of its total supplies. All its pork comes from England and Wales.
