Researchers at Griffith University will work to reduce conflict in the franchising sector, after being awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) linkage grant with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Project Head and Griffith Business School Dean of Learning and Teaching Professor Lorelle Frazer says although the level of disputes in franchising is relatively low, the impact of a dispute can be very disruptive.“The effects of a dispute can be far reaching particularly if the franchisor-franchisee relationship breaks down or if there are financial implications,” Frazer says.
“The ACCC, who regulates the industry, approached us to deepen the understanding of the causes and characteristics of conflict in franchise systems.
“Our research will provide an analysis of the most effective methods for anticipating and avoiding conflict, as well as provide a framework for addressing a wide range of issues.”
ACCC Commissioner John Martin says there is a need for the research as the regulator is often called in too late in franchise sector disputes.
