Jim Elder picked the printing industry for his first small-business venture. But not because he inherited a family business. Nor does he love the smell of freshly printed ink.
In fact, he probably couldn’t identify such a smell; Elder admits he’s entering an industry he knows very little about.
What he does know is that the printing industry is shrinking. And that’s why Elder wants in.
A 55-year-old O’Fallon, Mo., resident and former marketing specialist in the pharmaceutical industry, Elder signed on to be a franchisee with the Allegra Network, a privately-held print shop franchiser.
Allegra, based in suburban Detroit, has about 600 locations nationwide and $369 million in franchise sales in 2006. The company specializes in working with small businesses.
‘I like the idea of dealing with small businesses as clients,’ Elder said. ‘Some of them can utilize our help with graphic design and creating marketing programs.’ Read more.
