TAX officials padlocked an outlet of fast-food giant Jollibee Foods Corp. in Cubao, Quezon City, and 164 vendor stalls at the Greenhills Shopping Center flea market for tax evasion.

Internal Revenue Deputy Commissioner Nelso Aspe said an examination of the fast-food outlet’s cash register showed it had not declared as much as 51 percent of its taxable sales for 2006.

He said the franchise owner of the branch at the Farmer’s Plaza, Quest Food Corp., could contest the closure.

“Of course, we are not taking away from them their right to contest the closure, Aspe said.

“The closure serves as a warning to all unpatriotic taxpayers, particularly, those VAT-registered, to declare properly their gross sales for goods and gross receipts from services and come up with the correct payment.”

Aspe said the government stood to lose more if the bureau did not enforce the tax laws strictly.

In a statement to the press, Jollibee said it complies with the law in all its operations and requires its franchisees to do the same.
