Hairdressing-industry effort with Vidal Sassoon and behindthechair.com supports Habitat for Humanity International’s building of 37 sponsored homes
More than 450 Sport Clips across the country joined hair-industry icon Vidal Sassoon and behindthechair.com to raise funds in support of the ‘Hairdressers Unlocking Hope‘ campaign to help build simple, decent Habitat for Humanity homes in the Gulf Coast. The overall program raised enough funds to build 20 houses in hard-hit St. Tammany Parish, La., near New Orleans. Sport Clips raised funds through its stores August 5 through September 15 to build one of the homes in this much needed neighborhood of hope.

‘The eyes of the nation are watching what this collaborative effort among local, home-town stylists and world-famous hair-care ‘super stars’ accomplished when they worked together to bring hope back into people’s lives,’ says Gordon Logan, founder and CEO of Sport Clips. ‘All of us on the Sport Clips team across the country are proud to be a part of this effort to bring housing and a glimpse into a hopeful future to this hard hit area of the country.’
Sassoon, who spearheaded Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, found that the plight of homeless hurricane victims resonated deeply for him because, as a child, he was homeless after his father left his family and his mother was forced to place him in an orphanage in London for 6 years. During World War II, he was sent to live in the country. When the war ended, he was finally reunited with his mother. Thanks to housing constructed by the post-war British government, his family was able to move into a home of their own.
‘In the case of New Orleans and other affected areas, there is so much work to be done to restore housing and hope,’ he says, ’so we need to come together to show the world how caring, giving and strong our community of hairdressers can be.’
