Junk hauling is a lucrative business, and this Tulsa-based company is reaching out to other markets and greater opportunities for growth.

When David McDermott started his junk hauling business in Tulsa in 2003, he was determined to beat the only other player in the industry. Now, his company, Go Junk (http://www.18774gojunk.com), is expanding to Oklahoma City, and McDermott is approaching his goal by leaps and bounds.

“There are pop-up junk companies everywhere, but Go Junk is the only American rival to 1-800-GOT-JUNK?” McDermott said, referring to the Canada-based company.

Go Junk’s business model is working in Tulsa, where the market is now established and up for grabs. However, McDermott said that the business model will work anywhere.

“The market is still wide open and profitable,” he said. In addition to Oklahoma City, he is eyeing Bartlesville for franchise opportunities.

“Some people say, ‘I don’t want to get into the business because (1-800-GOT-JUNK?) is already there,’ but we’ve successfully won over the Tulsa market, and we are now expanding into OKC,” McDermott said.

There’s definitely a market in other areas, McDermott continued. “In Dallas, we hung postcards on telephone poles. Our first job from one of those postcards was $750. The calls I get are nationwide.”

Once Go Junk’s presence is solidified in Oklahoma City, McDermott said he is heading to the Fort Smith, Ark. area.
