Jason’s Deli, the Beaumont-headquartered sandwich chain founded in 1976, this week opened in California, its 23rd state, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.

A franchisee opened the newest restaurant in Riverside, Calif., a southern California city east of Los Angeles.

That franchisee also operates Jason’s Deli locations in Las Vegas, Nev.

The California location represents the 177th for the company, founded by Joe Tortorice and Rusty Coco.

Jason’s Deli also plans to open in Chicago, making Illinois the chain’s 24th state, said Sharon Begnaud, Jason’s Deli advertising director.

The chain is looking to open in Washington, D.C., later this year as well, she said.

Those restaurants would be company-owned, as 100 of the stores are.

“We have a mix of franchise locations throughout the country - even in Texas,” she said.

But the preference clearly is for company-owned stores, she said.

“The owners still like opening delis,” she said.
