Building one multi-million dollar telecommunication company is impressive. Building two is almost unthinkable. But this is exactly what the founders of telecommunications franchise Telcoinabox, Damian Kay and Damien Gould, have done in the space of five years.

Their first business, Your Telecom, was the struggling Australian operation of a Swedish telecommunication services company. Under the control of Kay and Gould, who together owned 50%, revenue skyrocketed from $600,000 to $18 million in two years. The pair sold the business to Commander Communications in February 2006.

More remarkable than Kay and Gould’s track record is Telcoinabox’s revenue growth. The three-year-old franchise, which is co-owned by Morgan Duncan, turned over $26.5 million in 2006-07 (revenue grew by 208% in 2006-07) and Kay says Telcoinabox is on track to add at least $10 million to that figure this financial year.

Its list of accolades is already long. Telcoinabox was ranked Australia’s seventh fastest growing business in last year’s BRW; it topped the list of Australia’s fastest-growing franchises in January.

Its business model is simple. There are two lines of business: wholesale and franchise.
Franchisees, which operate nationwide and under their own brand, buy bandwidth from the major telco carriers such as Telstra and Optus and sell the full suite of telecommunication services all bundled up with a payment platform.
