A fast-food franchisee wanted to be his own boss. He found financial success, establishing 10 locations — while also dropping 100 pounds.

In the late 1980s, George Smith was eating lots of hamburgers, fried foods and all-you-can-eat buffets. He weighed 296 pounds.

Then in 1990, he opened a Subway restaurant in Leesburg. He thought it would be easy to operate.

The franchise, at 2013 Citrus Blvd., bakes its breads on site, and meals are the well-known sandwiches or salads made in front of customers. It also has low-cal desserts such as yogurt and fresh apple slices.

“I just wanted to go into business for myself, and everybody has to eat. I thought it would be a good business to go into. Besides baking the bread, it’s a simple operation,” said Smith, 42.
