HEN Tim Ives is asked what he does, some people look confused when he says that he is a franchisee.

But Tim patiently explains what it means to be a part of a national franchised business.

‘People do ask what a franchise is.

Being able to tell them is a positive part of the sales pitch,’ says Tim, 45, a former deputy head teacher who has been running an Oscar Pet Foods franchise in Horsham, West Sussex, since September 2004.

However, most franchises remain an invisiblse part of the business landscape, despite franchising being a Pounds 10.8 billion industry. Few people understand what franchising is and research suggests that the vast majority have no idea whether the businesses they are dealing with are franchised or not.
