That would mean that the chain’s experiment with Reuben sandwiches was a success.

Mr. Smith is head of sales for Fremont Co., which is supplying sauerkraut for the sandwiches being sold in about 2 dozen Subway shops in the Toledo area and likely soon available in 100 stores throughout the region, according to a local franchisee.

‘For something we’re not advertising, some stores are selling 100 sandwiches a week,’ said Marc Hall, who operates 6 Subway outlets in the Toledo area.

And the Reuben, dubbed a Southwest and using turkey in place of the usual corned beef, could be introduced on an experimental basis in up to 10,000 Subway shops nationwide, Mr. Hall said.
