There’s a lot to consider when deciding on a franchise. We asked David Steinberg, a Bingham Farms attorney who specializes in franchise law, for some pointers. Steinberg has represented Quizno’s and Dairy Queen franchisees in disputes with franchisors.

* It’s important to note what type of territory protection the franchisee will get. Some franchisors allow their stores to open within a 1-mile radius of each other, which could cut into your business. Commodity businesses like coffee and sandwiches get less territory protection than a retail store.
