Specsavers, the world’s fastest growing optical retailer, has revealed plans to open eight new stores in Queensland in the coming fortnight, with a further nine planned to open by the middle of the year.
The first Queensland Specsavers store opened at Kawana Shopping World on
Wednesday 5th March, with further new stores opening in Nambour, Maroochydore,
Buderim, Beerwah, Cairns, Arundel and West Burleigh. The Queensland store openings are part of a nation wide roll-out with 150 stores
promised through-out the country by the end of the year, as part of a $50 million
investment in the Australian market.Specsavers co-founder, Doug Perkins, says the company’s partner/franchise model gives optometry professionals the buying power to compete against what he calls a monopoly in the Australian optical market.
“The professionals coming out of university, even though they are the best people to lead, they don’t have this opportunity because of the corporate or commercial side of any business,” says Perkins.
“The aim of Specsavers is to develop these skills and also to develop the support services for these professionals to be able to lead their practice teams, and to bring in good quality management and training into their store.”
Perkins says the Australian market is lacking in choice and competition compared to other countries, with major players OPSM, Laubman & Pank and Budget Eyewear all owned by one group.
